The NZIQS welcomes qualified, experienced quantity surveyors, students studying quantity surveying, and people who have an interest in quantity surveying to become members of the NZIQS.

 Affiliate and MNZIQS Application Deadlines:

4th of October » 15th of November

For International Student applicants, please ensure your invoice is paid by the date specified in the email; as we are undergoing an internal system upgrade, we must ensure International memberships are paid in full prior to transfer. If your application is still pending by the 28th of October, it may be cancelled and you will need to re-apply.

Membership Grades

Student-Studying

You must apply from within New Zealand, and be studying a Quantity Surveying or otherwise relevant degree at a New Zealand tertiary institute. This membership grade is free, and lasts as long as you are studying. Student-Studying members gain access to study materials at a special member price, and can be accessed via the Members Only section of our website.

Student

Applicable when you are either applying from outside of New Zealand, have graduated from studying, or are not currently eligible for Affiliate/MNZIQS membership. Student members do not receive any postnominals, but are allowed to say they are a Student Member of the institute on their public profile (e.g. LinkedIn) and Curriculum Vitae (CV).

Affiliate

Affiliate members gain the postnominals NZIQS (Affil.). Affiliate members do not have to be currently living within New Zealand, so long as they satisfy one of the following five membership pathways:
New Zealand Diploma New Zealand Degree Approved Overseas Qualification Relevant Industry Qualification No Approved Qualification
1 year of Quantity Surveying experience in New Zealand  Accredited NZ QS degree or  post-graduate qualification Resident in NZ   2 years' QS experience, including at least one year in NZ 7 years' QS experience, including at least one year of QS experience in NZ 

MNZIQS

MNZIQS possess the postnominals MNZIQS. This is the highest grade of membership members can apply for, and being MNZIQS also allows you to apply for Registered Quantity Surveyor status. 
There are five pathways to becoming MNZIQS, but all applicants for MNZIQS must first have the following:
  • A minimum of 1 years' Quantity Surveying experience within New Zealand
  • Pass the online Code of Conduct test prior to submitting their MNZIQS application
  • Pass an Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) interview once recommended by the Board for MNZIQS

Special Membership Grades

Registered Quantity Surveyor

A Registered Quantity Surveyor (Reg QS) is recognised for their excellence and experience in the quantity surveying profession. The NZIQS Registered Quantity Surveyor designation signifies that the member has worked to increase their value to a client or employer by learning new skills and keeps their knowledge current.
To apply for Registered Quantity Surveyor status, download and complete the Registered QS Application Form from our Forms and Documents page here.

Before applying to be a Registered QS, all applicants first have to be an MNZIQS, Fellow or Life Member, and must:
  • have a minimum of two years' quantity surveying work experience in New Zealand
  • pass the online Code of Conduct test prior to submitting their application
  • submit their CPD for review by the board, with a total of 15 hours of CPD over the previous 12 months
If a member meets all of the above criteria, there are five pathways available for them to become a Registered QS:
New Zealand Diploma Approved Degree Qualification AIQS CQS Related Industry Qualification No Approved Qualification
New Zealand Diploma in Construction, National Diploma in Quantity Surveying or a New Zealand Certificate of Quantity Surveying; and a minimum 6 years' of QS experience after completing the diploma Accredited New Zealand or overseas quantity surveying qualification; and a minimum of 5 years' QS experience since completing the qualification Hold the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors' Certified Quantity Surveyor designation   Relevant Industry Qualification, either in New Zealand or Overseas; and a minimum of 7 years' Quantity Surveying experience since completing the qualification The member may apply as a Special Case if the member has a minimum of ten years' relevant quantity surveying experience, and the Board will make a final decision

Retired Member

A Retired Member is a person who has been a Member (MNZIQS), Associate (ANZIQS) or Fellow (FNZIQS), and has retired from quantity surveying and no longer does quantity surveying work.

As a Retired Member, you can use the postnominal MNZIQS (Retired), ANZIQS (Retired) or FNZIQS (Retired).

Retired members are not required to keep track of their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).


Life Member

Life Membership may be awarded to an existing member by the Board to recognise their exceptional contribution to the profession of quantity surveying and the Institute of Quantity Surveyors. A list of Life Members is available here.

A member cannot apply to become a Life Member. Instead, the NZIQS Board appoints a Nominations Committee to consider and recommend Life Memberships.

In addition, three qualified members (MNZIQS, Associate, FNZIQS or Life Member) may nominate a member for the Board to consider awarding Life Membership. The Life Member Nomination form can be accessed via our Forms & Documents page.


Fellow (FNZIQS)

The New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors may recognise a member's exceptional standing and experience in the industry by offering them a Fellow membership.

A member cannot apply to become a Fellow. Instead, the NZIQS Board appoints a Nominations Committee to consider and recommend Fellow memberships.
In addition, three qualified members (MNZIQS, Associate, FNZIQS or Life Member) may nominate a member for the Board to consider awarding Fellow membership to. The Fellow nomination 
form can be accessed via our Forms & Documents page.

Fellow membership may be awarded by the Board to a member if they:

  • have been in practice, employment or business in a senior capacity for at least ten years and have been a Member (MNZIQS) or Associate member for at least ten years
  • are a Fellow, or senior/equivalent status of another society approved by the Board, ­and have a minimum of two years industry experience in New Zealand
  • have such standing and experience as the Board may award Fellow membership as a special case
Similar to MNZIQS, all Fellows are required to complete 15 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) annually.
