The NZIQS welcomes qualified, experienced quantity surveyors, students studying quantity surveying, and people who have an interest in quantity surveying to become members of the NZIQS.

Membership Grades

The critiera for each membership grade are listed in detail below. There are different pathways depending on your qualification and experience.

Student Studying Member

You are welcome to apply for the Student Studying membership of NZIQS if you are currently studying Quantity Surveying at a tertiary institute in New Zealand. Membership is free while you are studying.

Students living outside New Zealand are not eligible for this membership unless enrolled with a Quantity Surveying programme at a tertiary institute in New Zealand. Please see the International Membership page for more information.

Your application for Student Studying membership will be processed in our office within 2 weeks. Please check your spam or junk folders as the confirmation email might have gone there.  If you do not receive a membership confirmation email, please contact us at membership@nziqs.co.nz.  

Student Studying members may not use any post-nominal but may state that they are a Student member of NZIQS.

Student Member

The Student membership category is for people who are working or interested in the quantity surveying profession and who are not eligible for any  other membership category.

If you are living overseas please read the International Membership page information before applying.

Affiliate Member

You can become an Affiliate member through one of the five pathways below.

Refer to the NZIQS Membership By-Laws Appendices for all approved qualifications listed in the pathways.


Pathway 1 (New Zealand Diploma Qualification)

  • completed the New Zealand Diploma in Construction (QS strand), NZ National Diploma in Quantity Surveying, or New Zealand Certificate of Quantity Surveying; and
  • have a minimum of one year of quantity surveying work experience in New Zealand. This experience may be gained concurrently with, or before, studies.


Pathway 2 (New Zealand Degree Qualification)

  • completed an accredited New Zealand Degree or post-graduate level qualification in quantity surveying.

 

Pathway 3 (Approved Overseas Qualification)

  • completed an approved overseas quantity surveying qualification; and
  • are resident in New Zealand at the time of application for Affiliate membership*

 

Pathway 4 (Relevant Industry Qualification)

  • completed an approved Relevant Industry qualification either in New Zealand or overseas; and
  • have a minimum of two years of quantity surveying work experience, including at least one year in New Zealand.

 

Pathway 5 (No Approved Qualification)

  • have a minimum of seven years of quantity surveying work experience, including at least one year in New Zealand.*

 

Affiliate Postnominal

Affiliate members can use the post-nominal NZIQS (Affil).

MNZIQS Pathways

You can become an MNZIQS member through one of the five pathways below. Refer to the NZIQS Membership By-Laws Appendices for all approved qualifications listed in the pathways.

 

In addition, ALL APPLICANTS applying under any of the five pathways must:

  • have a minimum of one year of quantity surveying work experience in New Zealand; and
  • pass an online Code of Conduct test before applying for MNZIQS­.

After you have been recommended by the Board for MNZIQS, you will need to pass an Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) Interview.

 

Pathway 1 (New Zealand Diploma Qualification)

  • completed a New Zealand Diploma in Construction (Quantity Surveying strand), National Diploma in Quantity Surveying or New Zealand Certificate of Quantity Surveying; and
  • have a minimum of three years of quantity surveying work experience since completing the qualification.

 

Pathway 2 (Approved Degree Qualification)

  • completed an accredited New Zealand quantity surveying qualification; or
  • completed an approved overseas quantity surveying qualification; and
  • have a minimum of two years of quantity surveying work experience since completing the qualification.

 

Pathway 3 (Reciprocal Membership)

  • Applicants may apply for admission to MNZIQS if they hold an eligible membership of one of an approved Professional Association
  • Applicants for Reciprocal Membership must provide a letter from their Association that provides proof of their current membership status and that they have no outstanding complaints.
  • If you are currently living overseas and do not have at least one year of quantity surveying work experience in New Zealand, you are not eligible for MNZIQS membership. Please see the International Membership page for more information.

 

Pathway 4 (Relevant Industry Qualification)

  • completed an approved Relevant Industry Qualification either in New Zealand or overseas; and
  • have a minimum of four years of quantity surveying work experience since completing the qualification.

 

Pathway 5 (No Approved Qualification)

  • the Board may exempt an applicant from the above pathways' criteria at its discretion and award MNZIQS as a Special Case based on the member's level of experience.

 

NZIQS Competency Standards

The NZIQS Competency Standards define the areas of core competencies required to enure members are caable and competent to act on a broad range of expertise necessary for QS roles. MNZIQS candidates are encouraged to self-assess if they are ready for MNZIQS membership by completing an NZIQS Competency Assessment Summary. Read more about the NZIQS Competency Standards here.


MNZIQS Postnominal

MNZIQS Members can use the postnominal MNZIQS (Member of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors).

 

CPD Requirements

All MNZIQS members are required to complete 15 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) annually.

Retired Member

A Retired Member is a person who:

  • has been a Member (MNZIQS), Associate (ANZIQS) or Fellow (FNZIQS); and 
  • has retired from quantity surveying and no longer does quantity surveying work

 

Postnominal

As a Retired Member you can use the postnominal MNZIQS (Retired), ANZIQS (Retired) or FNZIQS (Retired). To seek Retired status, email us with your request to transfer to Retired membership.

Retired members are not required to complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Requirements

Registered Quantity Surveyor

A Registered Quantity Surveyor is recognised for their excellence and experience in the quantity surveying profession. The NZIQS Registered Quantity Surveyor designation signifies that the member has worked to increase their value to a client or employer by learning new skills and keeps their knowledge current.

Members may apply for Registered Quantity Surveyor status through one of the five pathways below.

In addition, ALL APPLICANTS applying under any of the five pathways must:

  • be an MNZIQS, Associate, Fellow or Life Member
  • have a minimum of two years of quantity surveying work experience in New Zealand; and
  • pass an online Code of Conduct test before applying; and
  • submit a record of 15 hours CPD over the previous 12 months; and
  • have paid their current membership fees.

Pathway 1 (New Zealand Diploma Qualification)

  • completed a New Zealand Diploma in Construction (Quantity Surveying strand), National Diploma in Quantity Surveying or New Zealand Certificate of Quantity Surveying; and

Pathway 2 (Approved Degree Qualification)

Pathway 3 (AIQS CQS)

  • hold the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors' Certified Quantity Surveyor designation;


Pathway 4 (Related Industry Qualification)

  • completed an approved Relevant Industry Qualification either in New Zealand or overseas; and
  • have a minimum of seven years of quantity surveying work experience since completing the qualification


Pathway 5 (No Approved Qualification)

  • the Board may exempt a member from the above criteria and award Registered Quantity Surveyor status as a Special Case if the member has a minimum of ten years' relevant quantity surveying experience.


Registered Quantity Surveyor Application

Your application will be considered at the next Quantity Surveyors Registration Board (QSRB) meeting, who will recommend the suitability of applicants for Registered Quantity Surveyor designation to the Board. The QSRB may call for more documentation or interview applicants when necessary for that recommendation.

Once registered, you can use the term 'Registered Quantity Surveyor' or 'Reg QS' and the Registered QS logo on your business correspondence.

There is no fee to become a Registered Quantity Surveyor.

Life Member

Life Membership may be awarded by the Board to a member to recognise exceptional contribution to the profession of quantity surveying and the Institute.

A member cannot apply to become a Life Member. Instead, the NZIQS Board appoints a Nominations Committee to consider and recommend Life Memberships.

In addition, three qualified members (MNZIQS, Associate, FNZIQS or Life Member) may nominate a member for the Board to consider awarding Life Membership.

Fellow

The New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors may recognise a member's exceptional standing and experience in the industry by making them a Fellow member.

A member cannot apply to become a Fellow member. Instead, the NZIQS Board appoints a Nominations Committee to consider and recommend Fellow memberships.

In addition, three qualified members (MNZIQS, Associate, FNZIQS or Life Member) may nominate a member for the Board to consider awarding Fellow membership to.

Fellow membership may be awarded by the Board to a member if they:

  • have been in practice, employment or business in a senior capacity for at least ten years;and
  • have been a Member (MNZIQS) or Associate member for at least ten years; or
  • are a Fellow, or senior member of the equivalent status of another society approved by the Board ­andhave a minimum of two years in the industry in New Zealand; or
  • have such standing and experience as the Board may in any special case determine.

 

Fellow Postnominal

Fellow members can use the postnominal FNZIQS (Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors).

Applications received by 5 pm on the closing date and will be included for the next membership meeting, provided all application documents are complete.



Re-joining Members

If you were previously a member of the institute you will need to complete a new application

If your membership lapsed because you didn’t pay your Membership fee, you will need to pay a re-joining fee of 20% of your former membership category. We will invoice you for the re-joining fee which must be paid before your membership application is processed.

Associate and Graduate memberships are no longer avaiable. If you were previously an Associate member you wil be reinstated as an MNZIQS member. If you were previously a Graduate member you will be reinstated as an Affiliate member.



Supporting Documents

You may need to provide the following information when upgrading your membership to Affiliate or MNZIQS.  We recommend that you gather these documents and add them in to your file directory on your computer so you can upload the documents when applying online.

  • Evidence of your completed qualifications  
  • A current CV highlighting in detail your QS work experience
  • For Reciprocal membership, a letter from the Association providing proof of current memberhsip status and that you have no outstanding complaints
  • For MNZIQS applicants:
    • reference letter from a NZIQS member or senior work colleague/employer, written within the last 6 months
    • names and contact details of two referees
    • (Optional) Competency Standards Assessment Summary. Note -you do not need to submit any Topic or Element Assessment Records completed

How We Process Applications

  • We'll write confirming your application, and give you an indication of when the NZIQS Board will consider your application.
  • Student-Studying applications are approved by our office, usually within 2 weeks.
  • The NZIQS Membership Committee meets at least every 8 weeks to consider applications and decide which membership category to recommend for approval by the Board.
  • You will be notified of their decision shortly after the Board approval.
  • When you have paid your subscription, we will send you a membership certificate

If you are approved for MNZIQS, you will be contacted to attend a MNZIQS interview conducted by an interview panel from your local branch before your MNZIQS membership is confirmed.

Member Subscriptions

Once your membership has been accepted you will receive an invoice for the membership category fee, pro rated for the remaining financial year (to 31 March).

Current members need to have paid their subscriptions before they can apply for any upgrade of membership and will be invoiced for the additional membership category fee pro-rated for the months remaining of the current financial year (to 31 March).
