About Registration

Registered LogoThe New Zealand Quantity Surveyors Registration Board was formed in June 1999 to recognise professional excellence and experience in the Quantity Surveying profession, following a survey in 1997 which showed over 70% of members then supported Registration.

The Registered Quantity Surveyor scheme was introduced in 1999 and modified in 2003. The registration by NZIQS of the Trademark with the Ministry of Economic Development was accepted in February 2006.

The aim of the Registered Quantity Surveyor award is to recognise members who have continued development beyond their initial NZIQS membership level and identify members who have not only gained further general or specialised expertise, BUT have provided evidence of their continued learning through formal and informal but structured programmes of development to an NZIQS panel. This system recognises the modern professional who works to increase their value to a client or employer by learning new skills and keeps up-to-date. It is equivalent to the licensing and registration processes required by Government for other professional groups and to the membership requirements of most international Quantity Surveying Institutions.

To achieve Registration, Quantity Surveyors are required to:

  1. be a Member, Associate, Fellow or Life member of the NZIQS;
  2. have at least three additional years experience, as approved by the Registration Board, since the granting of Member or Associate category;
  3. be accredited three yearly for Continuing Professional Development (NZIQS CPD accredited; and
  4. be a person of appropriate professional standing.

Registered Quantity Surveyors can be identified through using that term or RegQS on their business correspondence – see Full List of Registered Quantity Surveyors

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The NZIQS CPD scheme is accredited by the International Cost Engineering Council (ICEC) and endorsed by the member organisations representing Quantity Surveyors in the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors organisation (PAQS) , namely Australia, AACEI, Brunei,  Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan,  Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Sri Lanka plus Observer member South Africa.
