NZIQS Membership Catagories are;
Student
This category identifies applicants who are studying for their first QS educational qualification or does not meet the criteria for any other member category. It is available to:
Any person who is;
- currently enrolled in and studying for their first tertiary qualification in quantity surveying;
- interested in quantity surveying;
and
- does not have an approved QS qualification or sufficient work experience to be considered for another membership status.
Graduate (effective from 1 April 2012)
This category identifies previous student members who have graduated from an NZIQS-approved QS degree. It is available to:
Any person who has;
- Been a student member of the Institute of at least one year;
- Completed a new Zealand undergraduate degree qualification approved by Council
and
- Passed an introductory interview
Affiliate (effective from 1 April 2012)
This category identifies members who have graduated with a NZ National Diploma QS and have construction experience or who have completed an appropriate amount of experience in quantity surveying roles overseas and in New Zealand. It is available to any member who has:
- Been a student member of the Institute for at least one year;
- Completed a New Zealand Diploma in Quantity Surveying;
- Had a minimum of four years work experience in the New Zealand building/construction industry as approved by Council, such experience may be gained concurrently with part time study
and
- Passed an introductory interview approved by Council
There are also separate and additional criteria for applicants who hold other qualifications and QS experience.
Associate (no longer available after 31 March 2003)
Member (MNZIQS)
This identifies members who are regarded as having sufficient knowledge and experience to be granted full membership of the Institute. It is available to any member who has;
- been either a Graduate or an Affiliate Member for a period of not less than two years;
and
- completed a QS tertiary qualifications as follows;
- New Zealand - Bachelor of Construction (Construction Economics) - Unitec, Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying) - Massey University, Diploma and National Diploma of Quantity Surveying, National Diploma QS - NZQA
- Overseas - QS qualification approved by AIQS, HKIS, CIQS, SISV, RICS; for 'qualified membership, PAQS - accredited QS qualification;
and
- provides evidence of relevant QS work experience; 3 years post completion Diploma or 1 year post degree completion - including 12 months QS work in New Zealand;
and
- has been successful at a Branch interview approved by Council.
A Member shall be entitled to use the initials MNZIQS (i.e. Member of the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors Inc).
NB Council may exempt applicants from some or all of the required criteria in special circumstances. The special circumstances require evidence of particular and/or appropriate quantity surveying work experience and the standing of the applicant.
Applying for Membership
All new applicants and members applying to upgrade to the above categories must apply by completing the application form available by either contacting the Institute on 04 473 5521 or downloading from the NZIQS website
Retired Members i.e. MNZIQS (Retired), ANZIQS (Retired), FNZIQS (Retired)
This identifies members who have retired from Quantity Surveying and are no longer undertaking QS roles (although they may be active in other careers). A (Retired) member may reapply for active status if/when they resume Quantity Surveying work. The request for retired membership and request for return to active status is through application by letter or e-mail.
Special Membership Categories
Prior to 2003 the ‘qualified’ Member category was Associate (ANZIQS).
New applicants can no longer be awarded Associate (ANZIQS) category. ANZIQS level was gained in a variety of ways over the years with the majority completing a recognised QS tertiary qualification (e.g. NZCQS), passing 7 professional examinations controlled by NZIQS (and between 1990 and 2003 through NZQA-approved Diploma/s. The final step was a successful professional interview by an NZIQS Panel.
Fellows and Life Members
Fellow (FNZIQS) and Life Member (Life Member NZIQS) categories are awarded by Council and identify members who are specially recognised for their contributions to the industry and/or the Institute
These categories may NOT be applied for but are gained by Council approval following a nomination by three or more other qualified members. The nomination must be supported by a comprehensive written
submission to Council (through Executive Director NZIQS) on the approved form and signed by three (3) members of the Institute of Life Member, Fellow, Associate or Member status.
- Fellow (FNZIQS)
This is awarded to a member "of exceptional standing and experience" by Council, who must have been in practice, employment or business in a senior capacity for a period of not less than ten (10) years prior to the date of the nomination.
- Life Member (Life Member NZIQS)
Life Membership is awarded to a member who has made "an exceptional contribution to the profession of quantity surveying" as approved by Council.
Honorary membership (Hon. MNZIQS)
Council may award Honorary Membership to persons who, by reason either of their position or experience, or of their eminence, may be able to render assistance in promoting the objects of the Institute, but who are not in practice as Quantity Surveyors in New Zealand.
